On Friday the 14th of February our chess team went to a Féile Fichille chess tournament. The tournament took place at Ballinora GAA hall. Our school team was divided into 4 groups of 8 players.
Everybody played 6 games in total. A win was rewarded with 1 point, 0.5 points given for a draw and 0 points received for a loss. If the game wasn’t finished after 20-minutes, the result was decided by the remaining pieces each player had. If there wasn’t at least a three-point difference in points between the players it would be a draw. Neither player would win giving both players 0 points.
During the event we had two 20-minute breaks to chat and relax between matches. After every round, a sheet was put up on the wall of the hall displaying the new fixtures. These showed the board number and whether you were playing as white and black. Each player would move up the list the more points that they earned and also moved up the table order towards board number 1. I feel like there was a positive energy in the place and we all enjoyed the day out.
