First Class Explore the Farm

Apr 1, 2025

During the month of March, our First Class students had an exciting time learning all about the farm! Through hands-on activities, creative projects, and a special trip, they discovered the role of farmers, how farms work and the importance of farming in our daily lives.

Farm-Themed Art Fun

After reading some stories about farms such as ‘Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type’ and ‘An Circín Rua’, our young artists got creative by engaging in drama and making farm animals from clay and plasticine. From tiny chicks to towering cows, their creations were full of personality! They also used crayons, markers, chalk, and paint to draw beautiful spring farm scenes, complete with green fields, bright sunshine, and playful animals.

Making Butter – A Yummy Experiment!

The children became little scientists when they took part in a fun experiment to make butter! Using only double cream and lots of shaking, they watched in amazement as the cream thickened and turned into butter. We then completed a procedural writing exercise on ‘How to Make Butter’. Of course, the best part was tasting their delicious homemade butter on some crackers!

Milking – Then and Now

We also learned about how cows were milked in the past. They compared this to how technology has changed farming and makes life easier for today’s farmers. We explored the journey of milk and other food products from farm to fridge

A Trip to Leahy’s Open Farm

The highlight of the month was our fantastic visit to Leahy’s Open Farm in Midleton. The children had an unforgettable day playing outdoors, petting friendly farm animals, and even riding on quad bikes! One of the most exciting adventures was crawling through the leprechaun tunnel, where they imagined all sorts of magical creatures hiding inside.

It has been a wonderful month of learning, fun, and discovery. First Class now have a much better understanding of life on the farm – and maybe even some future farmers among them!
