Polar Explorers in Senior Infants!

Jan 27, 2025

This January, our Senior Infants have been exploring the fascinating, icy worlds of the Arctic and Antarctica! From learning about amazing animals to imagining life as a polar explorer, it’s been a month full of fun and discovery.

We kicked off by learning about the polar regions and the incredible wildlife in these areas. We particularly loved learning about penguins and even measured our height against different penguin species to see how tall we were in comparison! We also tried balancing a ball on our feet, just like penguins protect their eggs—it was tricky but lots of fun!

Our creativity shone during art time, where we made clay polar animals and painted beautiful penguin pictures. In the construction area and small world area, we built igloos and polar landscapes. It really felt like we were there in the snow!  In drama, we became brave polar explorers, trekking through icy winds and spotting polar bears and seals along the way. During playtime, we went on our own imaginary adventures and even played a fine motor penguin game. Everyone worked so hard on their skills!

We also read some wonderful books like The Emperor’s Egg, The Little Lost Penguin, and Pink! Each story taught us something new about penguins, teamwork, friendship, kindness and the wonders of the polar regions.  We were fascinated to learn a little about real-life explorer Tom Crean, who showed incredible bravery on his polar adventures. The children were amazed by his courage and loved hearing about his journeys.  In Irish, we learned the names of lots of different types of weather (which we’re sure Tom Crean experienced on his trips!). We’ve been practising saying them and spotting the weather around us.

It’s been an amazing month of learning and fun. We hope you enjoy the photos of our polar adventures below. Who knows—maybe there’s a future polar explorer in our class!
